Finally bought my first M4/3 Camera

Well I finally bought my first Micro Four-Thirds camera and I’m now officially in the process of converting from Nikon Full-Frame to M4/3.

Funny how things work out though. I had decided to buy a Lumix GX85 and was waiting for it to become available when I found a fantastic deal on a slightly used Olympus E-M1. For less than half the current list price I got a top-end camera and saved myself enough to buy one or two extra lenses. I should have the camera in a few days and I’m really looking forward to it.

You can see the significance of the change in the following pictures, both shown with a 24-70mm f/2.8 equivalent zoom for full effect.

Funnily enough shortly after buying the camera I found this little video that uses humour to demonstrate the beauty of the M4/3 system by showing two photographers out in the field. One with a Nikon FF and the Nikkor trinity of f/2.8 pro zooms (the exact type of setup I’m moving away from because of it’s bulk and weight). The other with an Olympus E-M1.

Thanks so much for the detailed thought you’ve put into this. I’m going through exactly the same change of mindset. The trigger for me is that I’m about to do a lot of travelling and my Fuji X-100S isn’t flexible enough and my Canon 5D Mk 3 plus lenses isn’t portable enough. After reading your thoughts I plumped for an OM-D EM-5 Mk ii with a couple of primes and I absolutely love it. As you say, it’s such fun.

Hi David, that great, really glad I was of help to you. You made a great choice, really like the E-M5 ii but ended up with a used E-M1 at a great price. I’m still learning how to use it but I’m having a lot of fun with the functionality it provides!
